Life and Martyrdom of Saint Andrew the Apostle

Saint Andrew was the brother of the Apostle Peter, and is referred to as the "First-Called" by many in the East. He had no Jewish or Aramaic name. Andrew was present when the paralytic was put in front of Christ through Peter's roof in Capernaum. After the Decent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Andrew traveled as far North as the future place of Kiev. Soon after, he went to Byzantium and consecrated Stachys as second bishop there. Andrew was martyred in Patras; according to a medieval tradition, he deemed himself unworthy like Saint Peter, crucifixion in the same manner as Christ. Thus, Saint Andrew's cross is an "X" shape. Let us pray:

Collect Prayer for the Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle

We humbly beseech Thy majesty, O Lord,

that as Saint Andrew the Apostle was both

a preacher and ruler of Thy Church, so may

he uncessingly intecede for us with Thee

Thourgh our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You and the

Holy Sprit, God, forever and ever.
